Saint Irene the Greatmartyr

The holy great martyr Irene lived in the 4th century AD. She was the daughter of the prefect Licinius, who was king of a small kingdom. She came from the city of Magedon and was originally called Penelope. When she was six years old, her father Licinius entrusted her to the wise teacher Apellianos who taught Penelope the wisdom of the door (ancient Greek). She was attracted to Christianity by the therapist her parents had prescribed for her, while she was baptized and given the name Irini by the priest Timotheus.

As soon as Licinius learned that his daughter had become a Christian he ordered her to be tied to the legs of a horse to be tortured. But miraculously, the horse turned on him and killed him. Great was the confusion of those present, but Irene calmed them down and after fervently praying, her father was resurrected. Then all Christians were baptized.

Then Irene went to Gallipolis in the Hellespont, where Numerian reigned. There he was tortured but emerged from all the ordeals completely unscathed. This fact resulted in many gentiles coming to the faith of Christ.

In the city of Mesimvria in Thrace, Saint Irene was killed, but by the power of God she was resurrected and attracted the governor and the entire people to the Christian faith.

Finally, the saint fled with her teacher Apellianos to Ephesus in Asia Minor, where she stayed performing many miracles and being honored as a true fellow apostle, until the day of her sleep, in 315 AD.

Orthodox Church celebrates her memory on May 5
