Saint Irene Chrysovalantou

Saint Irini Chrysovalantou was born in 828 AD. in Cappadocia in Asia Minor where she lived her first youth. Her father was the patrician Philaretos of Cappadocia. Philaretos was a favorite of the emperor Theophilos and a confidant of his wife Theodora. He was the military commander of the extremely important subject of Cappadocia.

In the winter of 843 Philaretos played an important role in the prevalence of the restoration of icons and the empress Theodora, now a widow, asked Philaretos to bring to Constantinople his beautiful daughter Irene who was then 15 years old, in order to marry her to her son Michael. Irini, however, did not seek to marry but longed for the solitary life. Her father reacted, but when he realized that for the young Irene the solitary life was a life decision, he himself took her to the women's community monastery of the Pammegisto Taxiarches Michael and Gabriel of Chrysovalantos, which was located on the outskirts of Constantinople where she became a nun. Six years later she was appointed abbess of the monastery.

In fact, God endowed her with the prophetic and miraculous gift. Thus through her prayer, she freed many from demons. She is depicted holding three apples which were given to her by a sailor who miraculously received them as a blessing from the Heavenly Father. She had a premonition of her death and passed away peacefully at the age of 104.

Orthodox Church celebrates her memory on July 28
