Saint Glyceria

Glyceria was born in Traianopolis in the second century when Antoninus the Pious (138 - 161 AD) was emperor. Her father's name was Makarios and he had been a nobleman. At an early age, he embraced Christianity and developed an intense Christian and catechetical activity.

When the local ruler Savvinus was informed that Glyceria is a Christian and that she destroyed a pagan temple, he ordered her arrest and imprisonment. In prison he catechized and converted to Christianity the jailer Laodiceus, who martyred for his faith in Christ.

When Glyceria refused to recant her faith, Sabinus ordered her to be thrown to the wild beasts. However, they respected her, even if one of them bit her, as a result of which she gave up the spirit a few days later.

Many miracles (healings and cures of demoniacs) of the saint are witnessed by those who with faith resorted to venerate her holy relic.

Orthodox Church celebrates her memory on May 13
