Saint Eleftherios
Saint Eleftherios was born in Greece and lived in the 2nd century AD. then the emperor was Commodus and Septimius Severus. Orphaned by his father, he was raised by his pious mother Anthia. Anthia's burning desire was to visit Rome where its soil was stained with the blood of the Apostles Peter and Paul. So once she went to Rome with her son Eleftherios. The bishop of Rome when he saw Eleftherios, appreciating his intelligence, faith and morals, took him under his protection. At the age of 15, he was ordained a deacon by the bishop of Rome Aniketos and after three years a priest. From this position, Eleftherios distinguished himself for the teaching of his flock, and in works of charity. Later and at the age of twenty, by a joint vote of the clergy and the people, he became bishop of Illyricum, today's Albania, based in Avlona. In his new position, Eleftherios fought with zeal for the teaching of the flock and in works and charities. The fame of his virtue reached Britain. So its king Lucius wrote a letter to Eleftherios and declared to him that he and his people wished to become Christians.Eleftherius immediately sent two men trained in the faith, who catechized and baptized Lucius and his people as Christians. When Septimius Severus started a persecution against the Christians, Eleftherius checked him courageously. Then the martyrdom of Saint Eleftherios was ordered, who received the crown of martyrdom by beheading.
