Saint Theodora Augusta

Saint Theodora was born in 815 AD, in Paphlagonia in Asia Minor, but early on her family settled in Constantinople. Her father's name was Marinos and her mother Theoktistis, who had a fervent commitment to Orthodoxy. In 830 she married the iconoclast king Theophilos and had a son and five daughters. When Theophilos died in 842, Theodora took over the kingdom because her son Michael was very young.Augusta, as her son's commissioner, compiled and ratified the minutes of the 7th Ecumenical Council of Nicaea (787), deposed the iconoclast John, the seventh, from the patriarchal throne and elevated Methodius. The definitive restoration of the holy Icons was also decided. Our church honors and celebrates this event every year on the first Sunday of Lent, which was called the Sunday of Orthodoxy. Unfortunately, however, after a few years, Varda's brother and her son ordered her Patrona's other brother to lock her and her daughters in the monastery of Gastria where they became nuns. She lived until her death there, excelling in the solitary life as well as in the imperial life with her virtues and faith, supporting her daughters.

She fell asleep on February 11, 867, while after the retrieval her holy relic was found intact, smelling of myrrh and performing many miracles. Our church declared her a saint. The sept was kept in Constantinople, but after its fall it was transferred to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Corfu. Today it is located in Corfu, in the church of Theotokos Speliotissa.

Orthodox Church celebrates her memory on February 11
