Saint Photine

The holy Great Martyr Fotini came from the Samaritan city of Sychar. We find the first information about the Saint in the Gospel according to John (D' 1 - 38).
Every noon she went outside the city, to the well called Jacob, and filled her pitcher. There, one day, she met Jesus Christ, Who revealed to her her whole life. The Lord told the Saint that He is "the water of life", that is, the inexhaustible source of the Holy Spirit. This "spiritual water" was given by the Lord to the Samaritan woman, who was baptized a Christian among the first women of Samaria and was named Fotini.

From then on she dedicated herself to spreading the Gospel in Africa and Rome. There she was also martyred by the emperor Nero (54 – 68 AD), when he learned that Saint Fotini had converted Domnina's daughter and some of her slaves into Christians. Along with Saint Fotini, her sons and her five sisters were martyred.

Orthodox Church celebrates her memory on February 26
