Saint Urania

Holy forty virgins and ascetics and Ammun their teacher

These holy women lived at the time of King Licinius in Adrianople in Thrace. The ruler of the Vavdos region (about 305 AD) arrested them as Christians and urged them to worship idols. They retired to a house together with their teacher, deacon Saint Ammun to strengthen themselves for martyrdom. When the ruler interrogated them again, they all firmly confessed their faith. Then Vavdos ordered that Amun be severely tortured and that a red-hot bronze helmet be put on him. Because the saint was preserved unharmed from the martyrdoms, he was taken with his disciples from Veroe (today's Stara Zagora, Bulgaria) to Heraklia, to King Licinius. In Heraklia they threw them to the beasts. The holy women together with their teacher prayed standing with raised hands, and the beasts fell asleep and did not touch them. As the soldiers lit a fire to throw them in, they prophesied to the impious Licinius the ascendancy of Constantine the Great, the victory of Christianity, and the abolition of paganism. Then they were sealed with the sign of the cross and ten of them jumped joyfully into the flames praising God. Thus, they died peacefully at the stake, and eight were beheaded together with their teacher Ammun. Of the rest, the executioners slaughtered some and others put red-hot irons in their mouths.
