Saint Sophia

Saint Sophia and her daughters Faith, Elpis, Agapi, lived during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (117 – 138 AD).

When the Emperor learned that the four women were Christians, he ordered their arrest. He asked for the three daughters to appear before him, one by one. The first was twelve-year-old Faith, who refused to renounce the Christian faith and was beheaded for that. This was followed by ten-year-old Hope and nine-year-old Agapi, who likewise did not renounce their faith and were beheaded.

Their mother Sophia buried her daughters with honors and remained for three days next to their graves, where she gave up her spirit. It is estimated that around 137 died.

Orthodox Church celebrates her memory and her daughters on September 17
