Saint Raphael

Saint Raphael is a new Saint. By this term we mean the Saints whose burial place was not known, but was miraculously revealed to believers where they proceeded to reveal the remains. Saint Raphael's homeland was the island of Ithaca and the name of his father Dionysios, who raised him with great Christian decency and studied him. His secular name was George. He was an officer in the Byzantine army and had even risen to a high position. After his ordination as a monk, he was ordained a presbyter, but he was also honored with the office of archimandrite and archbishop.

When the fall of Constantinople took place (1453) he was a monk together with the deacon Nikolaos in Macedonia. In 1454 they went to Lesvos and settled in the Monastery of Theotokos, where Raphael became abbot. After a few years, in the year 1463 AD, Lesbos fell into the hands of the Turks, who, in a raid on the monastery, arrested Saint Raphael and Saint Nicholas (new martyr), on Maundy Thursday of the same year. Cruel and merciless torture followed and Saint Raphael was martyred by slaughter in a very cruel way. Along with them, a twelve-year-old girl, Irini, daughter of the provost of the village of Thermis, Vassiliou, was also martyred.
