Saint Nectarios

Anastasios Kefalas was born in 1846 in Silyvria in Eastern Thrace. He lived in Constantinople for a total of 7 years and at the age of 20 he left it, even though he did not complete his education, to go to Lithi in Chios to work as a teacher. In 1877 he was ordained a deacon under the name he became known as, Nektarios. Saint Nektarios was inclined towards monasticism. However, the pressures exerted on him due to the gifts of speech and his education, eventually turned him towards the secular clergy. He graduated from the Theological School of the University of Athens and then moved to Alexandria.Despite his philanthropic, pastoral and anti-heretical work, he was forced to return to Athens after slander.

In the Spring of 1894, he was appointed as director of the Rizario school for 14 consecutive years until 1908, when he left his position for health reasons. His work in Rizario was organizational, educational, writing and pedagogic. He soon organized the school according to the standards of the ecclesiastical orthodox way of thinking. But what he was unsurpassed in was his pedagogical thinking. He delivered a diverse work recognized for his importance, his style and his spirituality while he was still alive by the press of the time and also by the University community. In advanced age he retired to a monastery in Aegina. He never stopped working either spiritually, in favor of the church, or manually for the expansion of the monastery. During the troubled years of the First World War he was always a helper, a comforter, knowing from a young age the difficulties of the world preaching hope for a better future until the end of his life in 1920.

Orthodox Church celebrates his memory on November 9
