Saint Procopius

Saint Procopius was born in Jerusalem under the emperor Diocletian. After he came of age, he assumed the office of duke in Alexandria, Syria. Among the commands was to persecute and punish the Christians. On one of his missions to Antioch a crystal cross appeared before him and a voice was heard from heaven threatening him with death if he carried out the orders of Diocletian and persecuted the Christians.

Surprised by this revelation, when he arrived in Apamea he asked to be catechized and after believing in Christ, he was baptized a Christian. Bearing the Cross banner in the battles against the Saracens, he returned victorious to Alexandria. Procopius, refusing to sacrifice to idols, claimed that he had won by the power of Christ. He was immediately taken to the ruler of Caesarea, Ulkios, and defended his faith in Jesus Christ. Then they severely tortured him and imprisoned him.In the prison Christ appeared, who showed him the crown of martyrdom and urged Procopius to strive for virtue and endure torture in order to gain eternal life. The next day they took the Saint to the pagan temple. There, Procopius began to pray and then the idols began to melt and like water poured out of the temple. The soldiers of the officers as well as his mother, saw the miracle and believed in Christ. They were baptized by Bishop Leontius and later martyred by beheading. And since Ulkios could not bend Procopius' opinion, the ruler Flavianus took over his examination. The ruler ordered the servant Archelaus to pierce the Saint in the abdomen with his sword, but as soon as Archelaus raised his sword, he fell down dead. After horrible torture he was beheaded gaining eternal life.
