Saint Spyridon

Saint Spyridon lived in the 4th AD. century in Cyprus. He stood out for his faith in God, simplicity, humility and his love, which manifested itself in different ways to every person in need. The reputation of his great virtue caused him to be elected bishop of the small town of Trimythoundos in Cyprus. As a bishop he continued to behave with the same simplicity as he had in his earlier life. When he officiated, he was served by angels and with them the virtuous bishop praised God! He prayed with such strong faith that he brought rain in times of drought, healed the sick and led to repentance.

Although he had not acquired a secular education, he knew the orthodox faith well and defended it in a simple and wonderful way at the First Ecumenical Council, embarrassing the heretic Arius. This humble bishop peacefully surrendered his soul to God on December 12, 348, at the age of 78. After a few years passed after the sleep of Saint Spyridon, his remains were collected and the faithful Christians found with amazement that his body had been preserved intact and unscathed by natural wear and tear. So, they placed his holy relic in a special altar to worship it and receive grace and blessing. However, when the Arab raids on Cyprus began in 648, he was transferred for safety to Constantinople, where he remained until the fall. Then, in order not to be desecrated by the Turks, the holy shroud of the Saint was secretly transported to Corfu, where it is kept to this day.
