Saint Stephen

He was one of the distinguished among the seven deacons, chosen by the first Christians to oversee the common banks of the brothers, so that no mistakes were made. Although the job of overseer for so many brothers was tiring, he nevertheless found time and strength to preach the Gospel of Christ. Stephen, who was full of faith and the gift of eloquence, performed great miracles among the people, which caused astonishment and proved the truth of the Christian preaching.

But the Jews, being prejudiced, unleashed slanderers among the people who spread the word that they heard Stephen blaspheming Moses and God. On the occasion of these slanders, they seized Stephen with hatred and led him before the council, presuming that he would apologize. Stefanos' apology was a model of boldness and courage. Undaunted, he launched a fierce attack against the Jews. And from a defendant he became a stormy auditor and accuser. Then the Jews, overcome by hatred, dragged him out of the city where they stoned him to death. Stephen's last sentence was "Lord, do not impute this sin to them".
