Saint Kyriaki

Saint Great Martyr Kyriaki was born in Nicomedia in Asia Minor and was the daughter of Dorotheos and Eusevia. Her parents were Greek, devout Christians. From her childhood, Sunday was dedicated to God. She was beautiful in body and soul. A judge in Nicomedia wanted to betroth Sunday to his son, given that she came from a rich family, but his proposal was rejected. She then denounced Kyriaki and her parents as Christians to the emperor Diocletian (284 – 305 AD) and the emperor ordered her parents to be tortured.Because neither flattery nor martyrdom had any effect, Dorotheus and Eusevia were exiled to Melitini, where they died enduring many sufferings for Christ.

The emperor then sent Sunday to be interrogated by Maximian. Sunday refused to renounce her faith. As a result Maximian ordered her to be scourged but her faith remained steadfast because she had the spirit of God with her. He then sent her to the prefect Hilarion, who asked him to make Sunday a pagan. He subjected her to horrible tortures but one night Christ healed her wounds and many pagans believed in Christ. As a consequence they were beheaded. In the end, Apollonius (successor to Hilarion) condemned her to beheading. The saint prayed and bowed to the ground. When the executioner approached to carry out the order, he saw that Sunday was already dead. He was only 21 years old.

Orthodox Church celebrates her memory on July 7
