Saint Dionysius of Olympus

He was born around 1500 in a village in Karditsa. From an early age he gave evidence of his devotion to God. Starting from Meteora, his monastic life was on Mount Athos for ten years. He lived with exercise, fasting and prayer, and managed to be elected abbot of the Philotheou Monastery. There, however, because the Monastery was Bulgarian, he met great opposition and was forced to leave Athos and go, around 1524, to the region of Veroia, to the hermitage of Saint Anthony the Younger, where he built the Monastery of the Holy Forerunner.

Out of humiliation he preferred to avoid his election as bishop of Berea and so he left once more for Pieria and Thessaly. He settled in an inaccessible area on Mount Olympus, where he lived as an ascetic in a cave, which survives to this day. Slandering himself, he was expelled from his hermitage and left for Pelion, where in 1542 AD. founded the monastery of the Holy Trinity of Survia after a miraculous indication from God.After three years and due to the complete anhydrity that hit the place of his persecutors, he officially returned at the invitation of the persecutor of Agha Sakos. His spirituality quickly attracted a multitude of monks, but he himself used the nearby caves for prayer and quiet. However, he did not fail to visit the surrounding villages to preach, confess and support the enslaved Greeks.

Orthodox Church celebrates his memory on January 23.
