Saint Ephraim

Saint Ephraim's secular name was Konstantinos Morphis. He was born on September 14, 1384 in Trikala. He was the son of a large family, which, in order to save him from child molestation, sent him to the Monastery of the Annunciation of the Virgin at the age of just 14. He stayed there until the age of 18 as a novice monk. Then he was ordained a monk and in a few years a Priest.

Since 1416, when Athens was occupied by the Ottomans, the Holy Monastery experienced two disasters. During the first the saint happened to be praying in a cave on the mountain but in the second on September 14, 1425 they returned and tortured him with particular ferocity for eight and a half months. He was martyred on May 5, 1426 at the age of 42.

Saint Ephraim is a "newly seen" saint. This term indicates that there was no written evidence of his life. His body was found after many apparitions and miracles by the nun Makaria Desypri on January 3, 1950 in the place where the Holy Monastery of Amomo is today in Nea Makri, Attica.

Orthodox Church celebrates his memory on May 5
