Saint Euthymius the Great

Saint Euthymius (377-473) was born in Melitini, Armenia, to parents who had great faith and a godly life, Paul and Dionysia. As his parents were childless, he was given the name Euthymios for the joy they felt at his birth.

Bishop Eutroios recognized the child's gifts and protected him. After Euthymios studied, he was ordained deacon, priest and then abbot in the monastery of Melitini. He lived as an ascetic near the Lavra of Faran, where he met the holy Theoktistus. They both lived in the desert. Following the model of the Faran Lavra, many monasteries were founded there under their supervision. He advised the monks not to have their own will and to keep humility and obedience.

The many gifts of Saint Euthymius attracted a multitude of people to him. It was claimed by God not to be harmed by the carnivorous and poisonous animals of the desert. He also miraculously nourished four hundred Armenians who passed through his monastery. He claimed to be illuminated by divine light and had a gift of insight.

At the time when the heretics had an impact, the saint supported lay people and monks in Orthodoxy. Among them are the monks of the saint, who remained faithful even in the Fourth Ecumenical Synod of Chalcedon (451) and their position was justified. St. Euthymius with missionary work of Christian illumination among the Arab peoples led to the Christian faith many of the Saracens (Arabs) and fought the heresies of the Nestorians, Monophysites and Manichaeans. Empress Eudokia, wife of Theodosius II, who was leaning towards Monophysitism, returned to the bosom of the Orthodox Church, after being convinced by Euthymius.
