 Saint George the Great Martyr

Saint George (280 – April 23, 303) is called the Great Martyr and Trophy Bearer and is one of the most popular saints. At a young age George enlisted in the Roman army. He distinguished himself for his courage and heroism and received the office of Tribune. A little later the emperor Diocletian promoted him to Duke (commander) with the title of Count (colonel) in the Anikioron battalion of the imperial guard.

In 303 AD when Diocletian's persecutions began, George did not hesitate to confess his Christian faith, causing Diocletian's anger because he held a great position and was his favorite. He initially offered him riches, land and slaves to convert and when George refused he subjected him to a series of horrific tortures. Tradition describes that after they stabbed him, they tore his flesh with a special wheel of knives. He was then thrown into a pit of slaked lime and then forced to walk in hot metal shoes. According to Christian tradition, God miraculously kept him alive through all these trials.

George finally received the crown of martyrdom by beheading. The Christians took his remains and buried them with those of his mother, who was martyred on the same or the following day. According to Christian tradition, George's faithful servant, Pasikrates, fulfilling his wish, took the remains of George, together with that of his mother, and transported them to Lydda in Palestine. From there the Crusaders took them to the West.

George's faith seems to be the occasion to baptize the soldiers Anatolius and Protoleon, Victor and Acindynus, Zoticus and Zeno, Christopher and Severianus, Theonas, Caesarius and Antony, as well as Queen Alexandra, wife of Diocletian, together with her servants. Apollo, Isaac and Kodrato and Saint Niki.

According to our Church, this glorious great martyr is the precious daisy, the excellent the divine, the glorious lion, the multi-bright star, the host of Christ, the companion of the heavenly army.

Orthodox Church celebrates his memory on April 23 unless Easter is celebrated later. Then the holiday is moved to the first Monday
