Saint John Chrysostom

Prominent personality of Christianity, Great Father of the Church, Ecumenical Teacher and one of the Three Hierarchs, together with Basil the Great and Gregory the Theologian. John was born in Antioch in 347. He was orphaned by his father at an early age and raised by his mother Anthousa. He studied rhetoric under the famous teacher of the time Livanius. His teacher valued him so much for his intelligence and rhetorical skill.

After his studies he practiced law for a while in Antioch and then left for the desert, where he became an ascetic. In 381 he returned to Antioch to be ordained deacon and later elder. During his priesthood he was distinguished for his interpretation of the Scriptures, his preaching and his pastoral activity. His fame soon spread beyond the narrow confines of Antioch, and in late 397 he was summoned to Constantinople to claim the archbishop's throne. On December 15 of the same year, the Endemous Synod of bishops elected him to the archbishopric throne of Constantinople, despite the reaction of the Archbishop of Alexandria Theophilos, who promoted his own candidate. His first goal was the reorganization of the Church, as he believed that the moral sanitization of society presupposed the sanitization of the clergy and the lords. His sermons pointed out the deviations of all social classes and proclaimed the need to return to the authentic content of the Christian life. In this way he came into conflict with many of the ecclesiastical and political rulers of his time. He did not hesitate to oppose the empress Eudoxia as well, as a result of which he was exiled twice. In his second exile, on his way to the Comana of Pontus, he died on September 14, 407, at the age of 60.

John Chrysostom emerged as a great ecclesiastical writer. His work is impressive, both in extent and in theological completeness. It consists of speeches, treatises and letters. His most famous work in the world is the Divine Liturgy (Liturgy of Chrysostom), which is mainly celebrated every Sunday in Churches.

Orthodox Church celebrates his memory on November 13
