Saint Luke the Blessed Surgeon

Saint Luke was born on April 14, 1877 in Crimea. In the late 1880s his family moved to Kyiv. In 1920 he was elected professor of anatomy and surgery at the University of Tashkent. Throughout his life he was an oligarch, as either his salary was small, or he was in prison, or when he was offered money for some treatment he pointed to other persons and asked that the money be given directly to them.In 1904, with the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese war, he found himself in the Far East, where he worked as a surgeon with great success. There he met his future wife, with whom he had four children. St. Luke was always a faithful Christian as he observed standing up all pannychids and orthrus, Saturdays, Sundays and Orthodox feast days.

In the operating room he always had the image of the Virgin Mary in front of him to which he prayed before each operation. When at the beginning of 1920 the order was given to hang the icon of the Virgin Mary, Saint Luke refused to enter the operating room. At the same time, the wife of one of the party officials was admitted to the hospital, and asked to be operated on only by Saint Luke, so her husband promised him that the next day the icon would be in its place, as it was.

From 1922 until his last breath he experienced arrests, tortures, exiles and hardships. He was imprisoned and exiled for a total of eleven years. During all this time he practiced medicine helping those in need. The reasons for his persecution were, the general persecutions against the Orthodox and his refusal to support the "Living Church", an ecclesiastical coup through which the Soviet regime tried to control the believers. In the spring of 1952, his eyesight worsened, while at the beginning of 1956 he was permanently blinded by glaucoma. For the last nine years of his life he was blind. There are testimonies that Archbishop Luke displayed many spiritual gifts while he was still alive. Many patients said that the saint had a clairvoyant gift, and that he healed them with his prayer. Finally, on Sunday, June 11, 1961, the day the All Saints of Holy Russia are celebrated, the archbishop - doctor Loukas fell asleep. In November 1995 he was declared a saint by decision of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church
