Saint Mark the Evangelist

Mark (20-68) was a disciple of the apostle Paul, and later, of the apostle Peter and is the author of the 2nd Gospel of the New Testament according to Mark.

His original name was John. The Roman name Markos was given to him later. He was the son of Mary, a Christian from Jerusalem, in whose house Christians gathered to pray. He was the nephew of the apostle Barnabas. The ap. Peter, he calls him his son, which shows the relationship they had between them.

Markos accompanied the ap. Paul and the Rev. Barnabas at the beginning of their first missionary journey, up to Perga in Pamphylia from where he returned to Jerusalem. Later, on the second missionary journey, there was a disagreement between Barnabas and Paul about whether they should take Mark with them. The result was that Markos followed the ap. Barnabas in Cyprus. Later in Rome, Paul, during his first imprisonment, found himself with Mark again. Then Paul asked Timothy to bring Mark back to Rome. Also, Mark was with Peter in Rome when he wrote his first letter.

Mark later ended up in Egypt, where he developed missionary activity, founding the church of Alexandria which he pastored from 43 to 68. He died a martyr's death. His relic was kept in Alexandria until 828, when it was taken by two merchants to Venice and has since been kept in St. Mark's Basilica.
