Saint Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist

The Apostle and Evangelist Matthew or Levi, is one of the apostles, a disciple of Jesus Christ. He came from Galilee and worked as a tax collector. One day when Jesus was passing through Capernaum, he saw him and knowing his inner soul asked him to follow Him. Matthew left his job without a second thought and has been by His side ever since. And not only did he leave the sinful for that time profession of tax collector, but he also gladly hosted Jesus in his home. Many publicans and other sinful people also came there, with whom Jesus ate and talked. The Pharisees, however, who had a guilty conscience, when they saw this action of the Lord, immediately accused him of consorting with publicans and sinners. Jesus heard it and said the wonderful words: "I did not come to call those who think themselves righteous, but I came to call sinners to repent and be saved."

The journey of the Apostle Matthew was long since he preached for twelve years after Pentecost in Palestine and then he preached to other nations for the spread of Christianity. Our church owes to Matthew the first Gospel in the New Testament, written in 64 AD. According to tradition, Matthew also preached the Gospel in Ethiopia, where he died a martyr's death.

Orthodox Church celebrates his memory on November 16
