Saint Menas of Egypt

Saint Minas was born in Egypt around the middle of the 3rd century to pagan parents. However, when he heard the word of God, although still a teenager, Minas became a Christian. Growing up, he chose to pursue a career in the Roman army, where he distinguished himself both for his wisdom and his bravery.
During the persecution ordered by the Roman emperors Diocletian and Maximian from 303 to 311, Roman soldiers arrested Christians.

Minas renounced his status as a soldier, and escaped to the adjacent mountain. There he was ascetic for some time with fasting, vigil and prayer.
But, at the age of about fifty, he went down to the city, on a pagan festival day, and defiantly confessed Christ as the one and true God. He was arrested and dragged before Pyrrhus, the commander of the city. There, speaking with courage, he revealed his name, his origin, his military background and his faith in Christ. He was taken to prison and after the end of the pagan festival, he was again presented before the ruler who accused him of insulting the gods in front of him and of deserting the army. The Saint accepted the accusations without hesitation even though they were not true. Pyrrhus, at first respecting his age and beauty, tried with words and promises but also with threats afterwards, to distract him from the faith of Christ. When his efforts met with the Saint's steadfast refusal, he ordered him to be tortured. In fact, at the time of his martyrdom, some of his old comrades urged him to sacrifice to the idols, saying that his God would justify him seeing the tortures to which he was subjected, but Saint Minas refused. The ruler, although he admired the saint's impudence, ordered that he be beheaded. Saint Minas received the martyr's crown probably in 304.
