Saint Modestus

Saint Modestos was a monk renowned for his virtue and high knowledge of the sacred and true philosophy that leads to the illumination of the Holy Spirit. For these reasons, he was elected abbot of the Monastery founded by Saint Theodosios the synod bishop in the 6th century, and wisely shepherded the brotherhood. In 614 the Persian king Chosroes II, at the head of a large army, advanced against Jerusalem. After a siege that lasted three weeks, the Holy City fell into the hands of the Persians, who systematically plundered it for three days and committed unspeakable atrocities. As Patriarch Zacharias was sent into exile in Persia along with Holy Cross and thousands of other Christians,Modestus was elected to replace him on the Patriarchal throne. With great sacrifices, Saint Modestus saw to it that the tens of thousands of victims were buried and that the Temples and the tents that had been destroyed and desecrated by the barbarians were restored, as much as possible. When he returned from exile in 629, Patriarch Zacharias again took over the governance of the Church until his death in 632. Saint Modestos then succeeded him as Patriarch and successor of Saint James. A tireless preacher of the Gospel, Saint Modestus adorned the throne of the Mother Church with the radiance of his virtue and the miracles he performed until his death in 634.
