Saint Thomas the Apostle

Saint Thomas was one of the twelve apostles, disciples of Jesus Christ. He was Jewish by birth and, like other disciples, was a fisherman. He left his profession and followed Christ, when he asked him to. He was one of the ardent disciples, but after the resurrection he became disbelieving and did not believe that Christ was resurrected, except when he felt in His hands the signs of the Crucifixion, in the second appearance of Christ to the disciples after His resurrection (it is said that during His first appearance Jesus to the disciples, Thomas was absent).

After Pentecost and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, Thomas followed the "go and make disciples of all nations", like the rest of the apostles, and traveled to distant places carrying the Divine Word. According to tradition, after Divine Intervention he traveled to India, where he began his missionary work, converting and baptizing many pagans into Christians.

He then traveled further east, where a man named Mysdios reigned. There Thomas continued his mission, but when he baptized the wife and children of Mysdio, he became angry and ordered the saint to be killed. His body was buried by the local Christians and many miracles were performed at his tomb. The holy relic of Saint Thomas remained there until the son of Constantine the Great moved it to Constantinople. In 1204 the relic was taken to Rome, together with the relics of other saints that were stolen as booty during the Fourth Crusade.
