Saint Basil of Caesarea

He was one of the three Hierarchs, a leading theologian of the 4th century who was able to assume the burden of the unity of the Church by taking the baton from M. Athanasios. He turned out to be the most distinguished orator of his time with his versatile education, solid philosophical education and wonderful organizational skills. In the ecclesiastical sector, as a bishop now, Basil faced the attempt of the Emperor Walis to impose Homoianism (current of Arianism), being in correspondence with Athanasius the Great,Patriarch of Alexandria and Pope Damasus of Rome. In the area of his pastoral responsibility he had to deal with the strong presence of the Arian element and other Christian, non-Orthodox, denominations.

The activity of Basil also included the organization of solitary life and the systematization of social work. When he entered the monastic life, he divided his father's property and as a bishop he established a complex of charitable institutions, a poorhouse, an orphanage, a hospital, the operation of which was entrusted to his monks. This social complex, almost an entire city, was called "Vassiliada".

His contribution to the evaluation of door-to-door education within the Christian Church was also capital. A scholar himself and connoisseur of Greek philosophy, he uses it as an instrument for processing and formulating his theological concepts. He does not reject the study of the classical letters, instead he urges their use as a garment of Christian religious teaching

At the age of fifty, Basil the Great, due to his sick state and his strict ascetic life, on January 1, 378, leaves the perishable world, leaving a legacy and legacy to humanity of a huge spiritual work.

Orthodox Church celebrates his memory on January 1
