Virgin Mary Kardiotissa

It is an image of the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus in her left lap, above her heart. Characteristic of the type of Panagia tis Cardiotissa is the peculiar attitude of the child Jesus who is completely turned towards the Virgin with his back to the viewer. This variant is applied to a series of mainly Cretan icons of the 15th century, the most important of which is the Cardiotissa of the Byzantine Museum, which is signed by the well-known Cretan painter Angelos. This attitude of the child applied to the flight into Egypt and Infanticide was known in the semiology of the future sacrifice of the infant Christ. An apocalyptic element for this pictorial relationship is given in the apocryphal text of the Martyrdom of St. Matthew, where Christ appears to the Apostle "in the form of children singing in paradise", there the child of Kardiotissa is identified with the infants of his infanticide Herod.

Orthodox Church celebrates her memory on August 15
