Prophet Elijah

Within the chorus of the Prophets of the Old Testament, the position of the prophet Elias is special. In the New Testament his name is mentioned several times by Jesus Christ himself. The prophet Elias lived in the 9th BC. century and came from Thesvi (that's why he was called Thesvitis). He exercised his prophetic gift for 25 years during the reign of King Ahab. He foretold the coming of Christ to earth, 816 years before his birth. Endowed with miraculous power, he strove with zeal and self-sacrifice for the exaltation of the worship of Yahweh (God), he fought with passion against idolatry and tried with his word to purify the moral life of his people. His faith was so great that he brought fire down from heaven three times, stopped the rain, and raised the dead. With the fire, in fact, he burned the soldiers that King Ahaziah had sent to arrest him. On Mount Horeb he experienced an epiphany (saw God himself), crossed the Jordan and finally ascended to heaven in a fiery chariot. He also attended the Transfiguration of Christ with Moses.
