Virgin Mary Paramythia

For this icon, the tradition tells that the initial expression of the faces and the posture of the body of the Lord and Theotokos changed, when the following happened:

In 807 AD pirates landed on the beach of the monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos and hid and waited for the gate to open in the morning, in order to attack, the abbot who, after the end of the orthro, was left alone to continue his prayer, heard the following words of the Virgin Mary: "Don't open the gates today, but climb the walls and drive out the pirates.' Turning his gaze thither he saw the Divine infant reach out his hand and cover his mother's lips, saying, "No mother, let them be punished as they deserve."But the Virgin, taking her Son's hand with her hand and turning her head a little, to free her lips, repeated the same words. This last formation of the faces remained permanently in the icon, while the monks, after being miraculously saved from the pirates, thanked the Virgin Mary and called this icon of hers "Paramythia", which means softening or mitigating, or concepts that equally convey the incident of miracle. The icon is a fresco and is located in the right choir of the homonymous chapel of the monastery.
