Saint Eudocia

Saint Evdokia was born in Heliopolis of Phoenice, area of today's Lebanon, during the time of Emperor Trajan (98 - 117 AD). She was a very beautiful pagan, and she increased her wealth by attracting wealthy lovers.

Evdokia learned about Christianity from a monk named Germanos. According to the legend, Eudocia asked him if she too could be saved from the Judgment. The German instructed her to remain alone in her room for a week, fasting and praying.Eudokia followed his instructions, and at the end of the week she had a vision of the Archangel Michael who assured her of Christ's love for all people. The German later baptized her.

At the age of 30, Evdokia built a monastery near Ilioupoli where she became a monk, while giving most of her property to various charities. She rejected all suitors, and when a persistent lover named Philostratus was smitten, Eudocia prayed for him until he recovered, after which Philostratus converted to Christianity.

Eudocia convinced many pagans to convert to Christianity. Roman officials enraged by her actions beheaded her on March 1, 107.

Orthodox Church celebrates her memory on March 1
