Saint Eustratius

Saint Eustratius was a senior officer in the Roman army. He witnessed the silent persecution of Christians during the time of the Roman emperors Diocletian and Maximian (284-304 AD) together with the holy glorious martyrs Auxentius, Eugenius, Mardarius and Orestes.

At that time, Saint Eustratios lived in the region of Semendria, in Asia Minor and was distinguished for his piety and virtuous life. Although he held a high military position, he could not tolerate the torture and persecution of Christians that the prefect of Lysias had preached. That is why he decided to fight for the Christian faith. Eustratius visited the imprisoned Christians and then presented himself before the ruler Lysias. When the Roman prefect saw Eustratius, a twenty-seven-year-old officer led by the Christians, he let go and ordered him to remove the robe and girdle. He calls him to renounce the Christian faith and sacrifice to idols. Eustratios refuses and the prefect orders him to be hanged and burned, while at the same time he is flogged. The saint was praying to the Lord and despite the ferocity of the torturers he was not harmed. Experiencing the miracle and the unshakable faith of Efstratius, the centurion Eugenios shouted defiantly that he was a Christian and that from now on he would stop carrying out Lysias' orders.

That is why Lysias decided to send Eustratios to the ruler of Sebastia, Agricolas. Eustratius was brought before the tyrant, who called upon him to obey the royal orders and worship idols. The athlete of faith remains steadfast in his faith in Jesus Christ and declares that he abhors false gods. Then Agricolas decided that Eustratios should be thrown into the fire and thus end his earthly martyrdom. After praying, he surrendered his holy soul into the hands of God in the flames on December 13, 296 AD. In this way Saint Eustratios received the crown of sainthood.
