Saint Theophilus

Saint Theophilos the Myroblytis belongs to the choir of the Saint Fathers of the 15th century. He was born in Zichna, Macedonia in 1460 of pious and virtuous parents. He became a monk in 1504 and a little later was ordained a priest in the area of Karditsa. He continued his ministry on Mount Athos where he became an ascetic at Vatopedi Monastery. After the death of the bishop Malachias whom Saint Theophilos ministered to, he traveled to Egypt by order of the holy Patriarch of Constantinople Niphonos. He had to arrive there accompanying the bishop Akakios to investigate whether it was true what the Patriarch of Alexandria Joachim (1487-1567) was working miraculously. It was then a time when Christians were accused there "as being responsible for deadly calamities". And the Patriarch with two unique miracles, which he had performed with his strong faith (he moved a mountain and drank poison without being harmed), convinced the Ottoman king of Egypt Melek Minaj of the innocence of Christians, so that he would "respect their rights" . The holy Theophilus, after worshiping the divine Mount Sinai and the Holy Land, returned alone to Constantinople, writing down the joyful news about the truth of the wonderful places of Egypt. For his virtue and humility he was called "notary and exarch of the Great Church".
